A new look Bracknell Town travelled to Berkhamsted for the opening game of the new season, eager to put last year’s disappointments behind them. Optimism was high amongst the traveling Robins fans.
With the sun beating down, the match kicked off at a lively tempo. Berkhamsted started brighter, pressing high and testing Bracknell’s resolve. However, the Robins’ defence, comfortably dealt with the early pressure. Gradually, Bracknell Town found their footing, and for the first 20 minutes, the two sides were evenly matched in a tightly contested battle. The Robins’ first chance arrived after 25 minutes when George Hunt’s curling free kick drifted just wide, failing to trouble the Berkhamsted keeper. Moments later, Seb Bowman unleashed a fierce long-range shot, forcing a sharp save from the goalkeeper, marking Bracknell’s first effort on target.
The game remained even, with both teams looking for an opening Bracknell thought they had taken the lead when Alfie Pavey latched onto a rebounded Francis Amartey shot, slotting it past the keeper. However, celebrations were cut short by the offside flag. As the first half drew to a close, Berkhamsted grabbed the advantage in the 44th minute, Harding, firing a low shot into the net to give the hosts a slender lead at the break.
The Robins emerged for the second half needing inspiration but struggled to penetrate a resilient Berkhamsted defence. Chances were scarce, with the closest coming when half-time substitute Max Herbert’s free kick in the 65th minute crashed off the crossbar.
Four minutes later, Herbert tried his luck again with another well-struck free kick, only for the Berkhamsted keeper to produce a good save to preserve their lead. The Robin’s midfield, despite their efforts lacked the creativity to unlock the hosts’ backline.
In a bid to spark a comeback, The Robin’s introduced Remy Coddington and Charlie Kennedy, hoping their fresh legs would have an impact. However, the substitutions failed to ignite the attack, and the Robins remained frustrated by Berkhamsted’s disciplined shape. The hosts nearly doubled their lead in the 83rd minute when a curling effort struck the woodwork. As the game petered out, Berkhamsted held firm, securing the all-important three points.The Robins faithful left disappointed, optimism tempered by a somewhat tame performance that needs improvement.
The Robins now turn their focus to an immediate opportunity for redemption as they face Uxbridge today at the SB Stadium. The team will need to regroup quickly, and with home crowd support kickstart their season.
