The Away Day Rough Guide to ……. Thatcham Town Reserves

July 31, 2012 by Suggs in Rough Guide to Away Days with 0 Comments

Ground: Waterside Park, Crookham Hill, Thatcham, Berks, RG19 4PA

So what do we know about this Ground? Our first away trip of the season, Tuesday 07th August, we’ve had a few games over the years with Thatcham Town first team, but to the best of my knowledge nothing competitive against their reserves. A pretty nice ground this one with a capacity of over 3000, good club house, plenty of covered seating down one side, and on the opposite side if I remember correctly is a nicely positioned tin shed for standing in (it kept me dry anyway). Last time I went the pitch was very good as well so looking forward to a bit of Bracknell style ‘total football’J

History: Thatcham moved to the Waterside Ground in 1992, and the record attendance there in the FA Vase against Aldershot Town in the 1993 /94 season was 1400 . In 2002/03 they were the first club in the South of England to be awarded the FA Community Standard Charter. Former players include Lawrie Sanchez (only played twice though before moving onto Reading FC) and a certain ex-Robins Graham Lewis.

Suggs’ Prediction for 2012-13: 8th……. finished last season 6th- you never know but for me would expect to see much the same this season

Home Colours: Blue and white stripes, shorts and socks blue.

Website: Good website, as you would expect though mainly in support of their first team: www.pitchero.com/clubs/thatchamtown/

Honours: First team: promoted out of Wessex League in 2005-06 currently play in Div 1 Central of Southern League. Hellenic League Honours include:

Hellenic League Premier: Champions 1974-75

Hellenic League Division 1: Winners 1958 – 59, 1964-65, 1972-73

Directions: Take the M4 Westbound. Exit at junction 12, sign posted Newbury (A4). Proceed for approximately 8 miles westbound on the A4. Take the first exit at the roundabout into Pipers Way, by the Southern Electric Operations Centre. Follow the road towards the Swan Public House and take the first turning at the roundabout by the Pub to cross the railway line next to Thatcham railway station and continue along Crookham Hill over the Kennet and Avon Canal and Kennet River Bridges. The Waterside Park Ground is just ahead on the left hand side with ample parking.
