Allied Counties South: Wed 10 March
Cove 0 Bracknell Town 3 (Lawlor 2, Nugent)
Bracknell recorded a second successive away win with a solid, combative
display in very cold, windy conditions at Fleet Spurs Kennels Lane ground.
Cove were in confident mood after last week’s 1-1 draw with Thatcham,
having been denied all three points by a 96th minute equaliser.
The Robins made changes to their line-up, giving first full starts to wide
midfield men Anthony Sharpe and Tom Barratt. Both players took their
opportunity with relish and their long throws from either flank added
another dimension to the attacking options.
Commitment is a word that’s never in doubt with this crop of lads,
exemplified by Tom Nugent and Alex Bruce. ‘Nuge’ had been up since
5.30am, travelling to Loughborough University for a day visit, but
insisting on rushing back to keep the Captain’s armband.
‘Brucie’ had played 90 minutes for the first team the previous night, but
the management couldn’t keep him away, although insisting that the first
45 was his lot last night!
Andy Ball was out with a groin strain so Jamie Lawlor was pushed up
front alongside Dan Gray. their combined work-rate never gave the home
defence a moment’s peace all night and Lawlor’s finishes were exquisite.
Bracknell took control of the early stages, with a strong wind at their
backs and the slight slope to their advantage. It’s often difficult to control
passing in bobbly, wind-assisted conditions and so it proved. Bracknell’s
main threat came from a constant aerial bombardment of the home
penalty area, which Cove defended well.
Cove briefly threatened with pace up front, but defences were mostly on
top.
Bracknell took the lead on 22 minutes and it was a real route one goal.
Keeper Ben Murphy’s long punt downfield soared high in the air and the
bounce eluded the defence. Jamie Lawlor was alert to the chance and
neatly lobbed the oncoming keeper to put the Robins 1-0 up.
Cove battled to get back in the game and began to exert pressure on the
Bracknell defence as they got on top in midfield. A deep cross from the
right was met by a thumping first-time volley that crashed into Alex
Bruce’s arm. Penalty was the decision.
Ben Murphy waited calmly for the kick, guessing correctly and pulling off
a fine diving save, low down near his post. 1-0 Half-time.
Playing up the slope and into the wind enabled the Robins to have more
control of their passing and they began to press for more goals.
The second goal, on 54, was again from a direct source. Barratt’s long
throw speared into the box and skipper Nugent arrived to send a deft
header into the net for 2-0.
Alex Bruce had been replaced by Leigh Mason at the interval, but there
was a quiet, efficient solidity about Bracknell’s defensive work. Most
headers were made, avoiding the long, bouncing ball threat. Barratt and
Sharpe were useful outlets going forward and Gray and Lawlor battled for
everything up top.
On 66 minutes it was 3-0 and game over. Another long kick from Murphy
was met by Sharpe’s header, guiding the ball into Lawlor’s path. Instantly
he saw the home keeper well off his line and steered a wonderful volley
from fully thirty yards over him into the net. Terrific stuff!
Pete Shay replaced Barratt with twenty remaining and Jake White came on
for ‘Nuge’ for the final fifteen minutes. Both looked lively and had
chances to add to the scoreline. Shay was blocked in a one-on-one with
the keeper.
Cove continued to battle and saw one speculative chip, from a long
through ball, just bounce wide of the post.
So, a pleasing performance that keeps us in third place. Special mentions
for James Langham, who had one of his best games in midfield and
battled for everything all night and, of course, to Jamie Lawlor. Two
young players with much more to come.
Bracknell: Ben Murphy, Alex Bruce (sub. Leigh Mason 45), Dan Comber,
Tom Kirk, Mark Hayward, Tom Barratt (sub. Pete Shay 70), Tom Nugent (c)
(sub. Jake White 75), James Langham, Anthony Sharpe, Jamie Lawlor, Dan
Gray. Unused sub. Craig Lock
P.S. Tom Walker, John Davie, Tom Field and Daniel Jordan turned out for
the Reserves the same night in their 2-1 home defeat to Hartley Wintney.
Well done lads!
