ROBINS PROGRESS INTO FLOODLIT CUP QUARTER FINAL

The Robins, under the guidance of development team managers Andy Findlay and Rob Creech travelled to Loop Meadow last night to take on Hellenic League Division One side, Didcot Town Reserves for a place in The Perpetua Press Floodlit Cup Quarter-final.

The hosts were quick out of the blocks and had a early opportunity to take the lead on 3 minutes when Tom Hoskin fired a low effort at goal but Steinborn-Busse was equal to it making a smart save with his feet. The Robins grew into the game and began to create opportunities, the best falling to Max Herbert who’s volley beat the keeper but crashed back off the crossbar.

After a fairly even opening half hour, Cornell played the ball wide to Herbet who sent a first time cross into the box for Bennett to head Bracknell into the lead. Just 3 minutes later the Robins doubled their lead when debutant Jesse Wilson played a long ball forward to Bennett, who controlled the ball on his chest and volleyed low past the keeper. In first half stoppage time he completed his hat-trick, Joe Gater played a long diagonal ball for Cornell to run onto, he crossed for Bennett who once again controlled the ball on his chest and volleyed into the back of the net to send the Robins into the break with a healthy three goal advantage.

The Robins began the second half on the front foot and looked to further their lead and they came close on 52 minutes, Roberts raced onto Cornell’s flick on and played the ball across the box for Herbert but is effort was turned behind by Ben Little in the Didcot goal. The resulting corner was cleared for another Robins’ corner and from that Joe Gater nodded home but the referee ruled it out for an infringement in the 6 yard box.

Bracknell were reduced to ten men just before the hour mark when Carl Withers saw red for kicking out at his man. This didn’t stop the Robins looking to further their lead and they did so on 65 minutes, Cornell played Roberts in on goal but he was forced wide by the keeper so instead crossed for Herbert to side foot in. Didcot started to capitalise on the Robins being a man short and pulled a goal back when Alex Marshall took aim from 25 yards and his effort flew into the top corner and three minutes later they had another, Steinborn-Busse saved the initial effort but Chris Mortimer was on hand to put the ball in the net on the follow up. But any hope of a comeback was quashed when Kane Fitzgerald was brought down in the area and substitute Dan Read made no mistake in dispatching the penalty on 80 minutes.

Read this time turned provider on 85 minutes, when he played first half hat-trick hero Jon Bennett in on goal, he out muscled his man, composed himself and slotted in his fourth of the night.
