GRANT & BOWERMAN STRIKE LATE TO WIN IT FOR THE ROBINS
After a run of frustrating postponements the Robins returned to league action last night (14th March) for the first time since hosting Burnham at Larges Lane 25 days ago. New player-manager Carl Davies took charge of his first game assisted by the returning Geoff Warner and Steve Nebbett.
Skippered by new club captain Dave Hancock the Robins dominated possession from the off. They came close to taking the lead on 7 minutes when Bowerman cut in from the left wing and bent a right footed effort towards goal but it sailed narrowly wide. They continued to push for the opening goal and should’ve had it when Jon Bennett played a well timed through ball to Joe Grant, he was impeded as he tried to round Saints keeper Ali Warby but still managed to hook a left footed effort at goal that was cleared off the line, referee Charlie Bullock played the advantage for the clip on Grant but the follow up was again cleared off the line, this time to safety.
Brackley continued to frustrate the Robins as they continued to sit deep and try and hit them on the break. As half time approached Bowerman went close again, this time seeing his low 20 yard effort turned around the post by Warby.
The Robins showed more intensity at the start of the second half, but the Saints back line continued to hold firm. Just past the hour make Jon Bennett was replaced by Khalid Senussi, he slotted in on the right wing and Joe Grant took up a more central position alongside Adam Cornell. Cornell, Grant and Senussi all came close to breaking the deadlock. The breakthrough cam on 72 minutes when McClurg played the ball wide to Senussi, he crossed for Grant who adjusted his body superbly to overhead kick the ball into the back of the net. Seb Bowerman doubled the lead 5 minutes from time when he bent a right footed effort into the top corner from 15 yards.
