THE ROBINS EDGE PAST VIRGINIA WATER TO MAKE CHALLENGE CUP SEMI-FINAL
The Robins made the short journey to Stag Meadow yesterday (20th March) to take on Hellenic Division 1 East promotion chasers, Virginia Water for a place in The Challenge Cup Semi-Final. Manager Carl Davies made 6 changes bringing in Elliot Legg, Damien Smith, Max Herbert, Dan Ronerts, Jon Bennett and TJ Bohane into the starting eleven.
Both sides cancelled each other out for large parts of the first half, neither side had a clear-cut chance to take the lead, until just before the break. McClurg played a pinpoint pass to pick out the run of Max Herbert who laid it off first time for TJ Bohane, he took the ball in his stride and slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
The second half was very much the same as the first. When Virginia Water did get in behind the Robins’ back line or fashion a half chance at goal, Chris Grace was always on hand to snuff out any danger. The Robins came close to doubling their lead on 70 minutes when Seb Bowerman’s 25 yard freekick found its way through the wall, past the outstretched arm of Waters’ keeper Matt Jones but came back off the post and Bohane was flagged offside trying to convert the follow up.
Substitute Joe Grant thought he’d made the game safe when he nodded in Bowerman’s cross a minute from time but the linesman again had his flag raised for offside, but Bohane’s first half goal was enough to see The Robins into the Semi-Final
