ROBINS PROGRESS TO FLOODLIT CUP SEMI FINAL
Bracknell headed to Gloucester on Wednesday night to take on Longlevens for a place in the semi final of the Perpetua Press Floodlit Cup. Development team manager Andy Findlay took charge of the team made up of a mix of first, development and allied team players.
The Robins started on the front foot and had Longlevens pinned in their own penalty box, but it was the host who took to lead when Brad Martin finished off a break away move, cutting the ball back onto his left foot and bending an effort past Steinborn-Busse. They weren’t behind for long as Dan Roberts waltzed through the hosts back line and fired under Ash Wintle in the Longlevens goal almost immediately.
Ten minutes later Dan Read slid in to convert strike partner Jon Bennett’s cross to put Bracknell ahead and it looked as though they would add to that lead with numerous dangerous balls going across the Longlevens box, but none of which fell to a Robins’ attacker. Instead it was the hosts who levelled a few minutes before the break when Jay Kennedy took aim from 25 yards, his effort hit Joe Gater and looped up in the air and over the despairing dive of Steinborn-Busse.
Despite that the Robins went in ahead at half time. The hosts’ Dave Rich was late into a challenge on Jon Bennett from which he was shown a yellow card by referee David Nicholson. The resulting free kick was floated into the box by Kensley Maloney and was met by an unmarked Joe Gater who slide the ball past Wintle from 8 yards out.
Longlevens went in search of the equaliser but it was the Robins who extended their lead on 67 minutes, the ball ricocheted around the box and eventually fell at the feet of Jon Bennett, his effort found the back of the net with the aid of a deflection. Dan Roberts finished off the scoring when he was on hand to poke home after Kensley Maloney’s initial effort was parried by Wintle. Roberts came close to completing his hattrick late on but was denied by a superb double save from Wintle.
A great result for the Robins who progress through to the semi final was made more pleasing with 16 year old Sam Jones and 18 year old Billy Cole both making their 1st team debuts.
