ROBINS MAKE THE QUARTER FINAL AFTER EXTRA TIME WIN
Seb Bowerman gave the Robins the perfect start on six minutes when he raced onto Short’s flick on to fire low past the keeper. Bowerman came close again three minutes later, coming within inches of getting on the end of Joe Grant’s Cross. Bracknell threatened again when Bohane timed his run perfectly to get on the end of a through ball from McClurg, but the hosts keeper did enough to hold him up until a teammate could retreat and force Bohane to put his effort wide.
The Robins came close again on 25 minutes when Davies headed McClurg’s free kick back across the box to Joe Gater, but his volleyed effort crashed back off the crossbar. Shortly after the management team were forced into a change with Justin Clayton unable to carry on after picking up an injury, Carl Withers was the man to replace him.
Further chances fell to Grant and Bowerman before the break but despite the Robins dominance they went in at half time just the one goal ahead and were made to pay for their missed opportunities on 50 minutes, when Reece Leek latched onto a long ball over the Bracknell back line and slotted the ball past Grace to bring the Colemen level. This awoke the home supporters and the atmosphere inside Pack Meadow was turned up a notch as both sets of supporters exchanged chants, this fired the hosts up and Bracknell had to weather a nervy 15 minutes of pressure from the home side in which they wasted a couple of opportunities to take the lead, but credit to the lads they held firm and didn’t fold.
The game began to open up and on 72 minutes the Robins came close to re-taking the lead when Bowerman skipped past his man and crossed for Grant but his miss hit effort went agonisingly wide. The managers looked to exploit the tiring legs of the Colehill back line and replaced George Short with Adam Cornell. With full time approaching Cornell thought he’d found the winner after tucking away Bowerman’s cross but the celebrations were cut short by a dubious offside flag, with neither side able to find a winner the game headed into extra time.
Neither side created any real opportunities in the early stages of the first half of extra time, but the game sprung to life 10 minutes in when Chris Grace dived full stretch to his right to superbly keep out a low effort that looked destined for the back of the net, from that the Robins broke up field and Bohane cut the ball back from the byline for Adam Cornell to side foot home to the Robins ahead and send the fans behind the goal into raptures. Shortly after the break Bracknell made their third and final change with Bennett replacing TJ Bohane in attack.
As Coleshill went in search of an equaliser they left gaps in their midfield which Bracknell exploited when the ball was worked wide to Bowerman, he skipped past his man and pulled the ball back to Joe Grant on the edge of the 18 yard box, he created himself a yard of space and hit left footed rocket at goal which the keeper managed to get a touch to but couldn’t stop it flying into the top corner.
Coleshill again poured forward looking for a route back into the game and they got it with a few minutes remaining, a cross was flicked onto skipper Carl Davies into the back of his own net. The Colemen looked to try and force a replay and threw everyone expect the keeper forward, the robins won possession back on the edge of their own box and released Bennett who took the ball around the advancing keeper but was hauled back and referee James Oldham pointed to the spot. Seb Bowerman calmly sent the keeper the wrong way but there was nothing calm about the celebration that followed as both players and fans celebrated the club making it through to the FA Vase quarter-final, the furthest the club have made it in the competition. The full time whistle was greeted with a massive cheer from the travelling fans who had gathered by the tunnel to congratulate the players as they left the pitch.
