ROBINS EXIT COUNTY CUP IN FRONT OF A BUMPER CROWD AT THE LANE
We took on our near neighbours Slough Town at Lane on Tuesday night for a place in the Berks&Bucks Senior Cup Semi-final. Prior to the game a decision had been made to dedicate the game to the late Kevin McGoldrick, who had sadly passed away earlier the previous week. Kevin who was affectionately known to all at Slough as Super Kev had been the Rebels’ physiotherapist for the last 32 years. A collection was held to contribute towards Super Kev’s funeral costs and Kick off was preceded by an immaculately-observed minute’s silence in his memory.
The Robins threatened on eight minutes as TJ Bohane was played clean through, but a heavy touch allowed Slough keeper Jack Turner to claim the ball but But Bohane made no mistake three minutes later, swivelling and looping a shot over Turner after a deep cross from Seb Bowerman had been nodded down by Dave Hancock.
After the goal Slough settled and got the ball down and played some neat passing football which led to the equaliser on 26 minutes, the Rebels’ Chris Flood got in a shot from 12 yards which squirmed through Grace’s hands and into the net.
Slough’s one-touch football around the edge of the box resulted in Nathan Webb finding space to slide the ball across for Flood, who neatly finished again.
Grace redeemed himself by saving Matt Lench’s attempted chip soon after, but five minutes before the interval he could do nothing to prevent the Rebels taking the lead with a superb team goal, Slough’s one-touch football around the edge of the box resulted in Nathan Webb finding space to slide the ball across for Flood, who neatly finished again.
The Robins could have gone in to the break level though if not for a smart save from Turner to deny
Bohane’s half-volley just before the whistle, instead Slough extended their lead early in the second half with Josh Jackman coming inside from his left full-back position to bend the ball in to the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Slough looked to further their lead but Grace performed heroics making a number of point blank saves to keep us in the game.
The Robins reduced the deficit on 82 minutes with Seb Bowerman coming inside from the left wing to fire a shot past Turner and into the far corner, making it 3-2 and that’s how it stayed until the final whistle.
The Rebels play two levels above the Robins in the Southern Premier Division and for spells during the match the Robins more than matched their visitors and gave a good account of themselves.
